OCP UPDATE: Feb 16, 2011
A community meeting was held last night at Bench School to discuss a proposed VORR (vessel operation restriction regulation) and navigation channel for Cowichan Bay. The VORR would restrict boating activity (motor boats and anchoring) in areas identified as eelgrass habitat; the marked navigation channel is intended to provide safe, unobstructed access to marinas and the boat launch in Cowichan Bay.
Representatives of partner agencies (DFO, Transport Canada, RCMP, Cowichan Tribes, CVRD, BC Wildlife Federation, and Living Rivers Trust) responded to questions and concerns about the proposal. Key concerns expressed by community members included waterfront property owners' access and the proposed boundaries of the VORR areas.
The partner agencies will meet soon to discuss potential revisions to the proposed VORR and other opportunities for the community to provide input.
More information about the proposal is available on the CVRD website:
